Frequently Asked Questions

+ Why the name Red?

Red Church was once a network of churches meeting throughout Melbourne, and the name Red came from the Spanish word for ‘network’.

+ What does Red Church believe?

  • We believe that there is one true God who has existed for eternity as three persons, the Father, Son and the Holy Spirit.
  • We believe in the divine inspiration and absolute authority of the Bible which is the written Word of God – fully trustworthy for faith and conduct.
  • We believe that God created people in His image, male and female, to share in His eternal life, worship Him and steward creation.
  • We believe that due to humanity’s rebellion against God (we call this sin), everyone has fallen short of the glory of God and is driven by their fallen nature and eternally separated from Him.
  • We believe that God showed His great love for us by sending His son, Jesus Christ, in human form, through the incarnation, born of the virgin Mary. Jesus was without sin, fully God and fully man.
  • We believe in the atoning sacrifice of Christ on the cross; paying the price of sin (separation from God), defeating evil and death, and reconciling us back with God.
  • We believe that Jesus physically rose from the dead on the third day, and that He ascended to the Father’s right hand where He now reigns as the Saviour of the world.
  • We believe that fallen humans are justified through faith in this Saviour, Jesus Christ.
  • We believe that God sent His comforter and guide, the Holy Spirit, who leads us into repentance, life with Christ through new birth, empowers our Christian life, deepens our faith and enables us to witness to the world.
  • We believe that God has established His people as the Church, His priesthood of all believers, who are empowered by the Holy Spirit through the impartation of spiritual gifts, who are called to proclaim the gospel, promote justice and live out His Kingdom life on earth.
  • We believe that Christ will personally and visibly return to fulfil God’s salvation plan; He will raise all people to the harvest of judgement, in which the righteous will enter into eternal life with Him and the rebellious into eternal separation, and He will finally establish a new heaven and earth.

+ What is the call on Red Church?

Sitting alongside our Vision and Mission is a strong sense of call that God has given Red Church. This call gives focus, purpose and identity to Red, and can be summarised in three key areas:

  • We are called to focus on Discipleship: We firmly believe that God is looking not just for believers, but for followers. We are passionate about growing disciples: people who are committed to living authentically as followers of Christ – growing in relationship, obedience and service to Him – and encouraging others to do the same.
  • Our call is Apostolic: Apostolic means to ‘be sent with a message’. As a Church, Red has a particular message to steward and share (centred around discipleship in today’s culture), and that message is to go out beyond the walls of our local Church congregations to build up the wider Church body.
  • We are called to speak into Faith and Culture: As citizens of God’s Kingdom we have a mandate to shape—rather than be shaped by—the culture around us.

+ Where can I find more of Red’s teaching and resources?

You can listen to our Sunday sermons and other resources here. It’s our recommendation that these supplement, rather than replace, your presence in your own local church and your submission to the leaders that God has placed around you.

+ What is Red’s leadership structure?

Red is governed by a Board, made up of Red Church members. The Board employs the Senior Leader who in turn employs the staff. Churches of Christ Victoria/Tasmania provide oversight, care and compliance for certain areas of operation as necessary.

+ What denomination is Red Church?

Red Church is affiliated with Churches of Christ Victoria/Tasmania. Our members are made up of people from a variety of church backgrounds; Baptist to Pentecostal, Catholic to Anglican and everyone in between.

+ How can I get connected in the Red community?

How can I get connected in the Red community? If you’re local to Melbourne, we’d love to invite you to join our Nunawading or Kilsyth communities. Join us on Sundays (turning up regularly, on time, has a big impact on being connected!) and head to the I'm New page to see ways you can get connected.

For those overseas or interstate, you can listen to our sermon podcast here. Keeping up with our Facebook and Instagram is a good way to hear about further resources, recommended books, or other events. We encourage you to see these things as supplementary to your commitment to your own local church and spiritual growth, not an end in themselves.

+ What if my question wasn’t answered here?

If there is something we’ve not covered here on our website, feel free to chat with us at the connect space after a Sunday gathering, sign up to attend a Red101 or email us at: hello@redchurch.org.au

Prayer

Absolute, consistent dependency on God is what enables the Church to bear fruit that lasts. Red is committed to seeing God’s will for the church through prayer and acknowledges the transforming power of prayer in individual lives.

At Red Church we do this through:
Prayer Training – ‘The Prayer Course’ is offered annually to encourage attendees to deepen their prayer life. ‘The Prayer Course’ is produced by 24-7 Prayer with 8 sessions based on ‘The Lord’s Prayer’.
Kingdom Come Nights held termly – All attendees across all services are invited to these nights of prayer and worship as we seek God’s Spirit together to cry out to Him that He would move in our church, our city and our nation.
Prayer Ministry – Anyone is welcome to receive prayer at one of our Sunday service gatherings. There is an opportunity to receive prayer ministry after the teaching.

Kids

We are passionate about discipling the next generation to be devoted to Christ’s alternative for the world and equipping them to live faith in real life. Our Kids Church meets every week at our AM services.

As you arrive at the foyer you will find a check-in station for your families where you can register your child for our dynamic, age-appropriate kids’ programs. The children will receive a name sticker with adults receiving a matching sticker that you will be required to show when picking up your child at the end of the program. You will also be notified if your child becomes unsettled during the service as we desire church to be a positive experience for all. All our volunteers are screened, trained and have a ‘Working with Children Check’ as we consider it a privilege to work with your most precious children.

Preschool
Our preschool program is for children 18 months to 4-year-old kinder. It is a safe and friendly program that aims to bring God and His word alive in a relevant and fun way. We recognise families have the most significant impact in the life of a child so each month we hand out a ‘Parent Cue Sheet’ that provides you with information about our theme for the month, bible stories and memory verses and ideas for you to implement at home. Preschool children are asked to bring fruit to share as a snack.

Primary
After checking in your Primary aged children in the foyer, they enter into big church for worship. From there, they are released to the Primary room after approximately 30 minutes. We are committed to raising a faith-filled generation and so the church community is actively involved in discipling our kids. We encourage vibrant community through small group connection, a heart to worship, a strong biblical world view, an intimate relationship with God and a passion to be influencers in our world.

Youth

Junior Youth
Junior Youth is for students in Grade 6 to Year 9. Junior Youth meet together on alternate Friday evenings between 7:00 and 9:00pm, mostly at our Red Church base: 43 Orchard Grove, Blackburn South.
The focuses of our evenings are connection, fun, discipleship and service. Our teams are led by enthusiastic volunteers who seek to disciple, encourage and be a positive influence in the lives of our youth.
On alternate Friday evenings youth meet in small discipleship groups in houses.

Senior Youth
Senior Youth is for students in Year 10 to Year 12. They meet in a small group with a discipleship focus on Wednesday evenings from 7:30 to 9:00pm in homes. This intimate setting fosters deeper connections and they are encouraged to wrestle with how to live out a life of faith in our culture.

Alpha.png

Alpha

If you are new to faith, have a bunch of questions and/or want to explore the basics of the Christian faith – join our next Alpha Course. Alpha is a 12-week course exploring life and the Christian faith in an open, friendly and informal environment. If you want to understand more about following Jesus, we would love to host you at the next course. No pressure. No follow-up. No charge.

We’ll be hosting our next Alpha during the second half of 2020.

Discipleship & Groups

As our mission statement acknowledges, we want to be people awakened to Christ’s message and be equipped to live faith in real life. We are not called to do this alone. We are God’s people. Jesus’ body. And not just on a Sunday.

To build a community of resilient disciples, we believe in the power of gathering throughout the week around God’s word and in prayer together.

Whether you have just met Jesus or you have been following Him for decades; we are always being led to grow in our faith by abiding with Jesus (John 15:5,8), being renewed (2 Corinthians 5:17) and being sent out to be His hands and feet in the world (Matthew 28:18-20).

If you call Red Church home and you want to keep growing in depth and maturity of faith, we invite you to join a Huddle.

What is a Huddle?

A Huddle is a group of four people of the same gender, centred around the presence of God, His Word (the Bible), contending prayer, and to go and follow Jesus in your everyday.

How do they work?

Consider Huddles to be a framework to abide with Jesus, be renewed by Him and be released to go and live His purpose each day. Though there is not a prescribed program, Huddles are shaped to help you establish meaningful direction and rhythms when you gather together. Each group may look different depending on time, location, content and attendees.

Here are a few things to consider in order to get started well:

  • We recommend four people of the same gender of different ages and stages of life

  • Commit to gather weekly for 12 months, breaking for school holidays

  • Attend our next Huddle Basics (see below)

  • Work through our Huddle Basics videos together (coming March 2020)

  • Consider what you may need to let go of to be a part of a Huddle

How do I join a Huddle?

Here are two options:

  1. Register for our next Huddle Basics where we will share more vision and detail for Huddles, as well as connecting you into a Huddle with people in your area.

  2. You may be in an existing group and wish to adopt the vision and practice of Huddles. We will provide resources online in March 2020 that we welcome you to use.

Giving

When Jesus talked about money, he urged people to prioritise their investments in the unseen world (Matt 6:19-34).

More than just enabling a sustained, effective and fruitful ministry, your giving to Red Church is an opportunity to partner with God and us as we see His kingdom flourish in the world. If you call Red Church home, we’d love to encourage you to prayerfully consider regular financial giving to Red.

To hear more about Red’s teaching and values around tithing, generosity and the Kingdom economy, listen to these messages:

Financial updates are given every twelve months by the Treasurer of the Board to update and inform the Church community.
